In recent years, AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Grok, Qwen, Claude, and DeepSeek have become deeply integrated into everyday life. Whether for content creation, career advice, life coaching, medical queries, or business strategies, these tools are increasingly regarded as reliable sources of guidance—almost like modern-day oracles. Their responses, often delivered with fluency, confidence, and remarkable depth, create an impression of authority. Yet this perception conceals a dangerous misconception: the tendency to mistake knowledge for wisdom. This distinction is critical, as blurring the two carries significant risks for decision-making and its consequences.

How GPTs Really Work: Patterns, Not Thinking

Imagine you’re organising your music collection on Spotify. You might group songs that feel alike—upbeat pop tracks in one playlist, instrumentals in another, and workout tracks in a third. AI does something remarkably similar, but instead of grouping songs, it clusters words and ideas, arranging them by patterns and similarities.

When AI systems are trained, they read billions of pages of text from books, websites, and articles. They detect patterns, such as: The word “doctor” often appears near words like “hospital,” “patient,” and “medicine.” Sentences about happiness tend to include words like “joy,” “smile,” and “celebration.” Financial advice often mentions “budget,” “savings,” and “investment.” The word “cat” is often found near “meow,” “pet,” and “fur.” This doesn’t mean the AI knows what a doctor, happiness, or a cat is—it simply recognices that these words frequently appear together.

This process is powered by vector embeddings—mathematical representations of text. Imagine them as coordinates on a vast, multidimensional map where similar ideas cluster together in neighbourhoods. When you ask a question, the AI locates the relevant neighbourhood and constructs a response based on the patterns it finds there.

This illustration shows how AI models map sentences into a multidimensional semantic space, where distance reflects similarity in meaning. “A little boy is walking.” is close to “A sad boy is walking.” and “A little boy is running.” since they share similar structure and subject. That’s it. AI isn’t “understanding” sadness or imagining a child’s feelings.It’s simply performing lightning-fast pattern matching to predict the next likely words.

Knowledge vs. Wisdom: The Critical Difference

This brings us to the heart of the matter. There is a fundamental difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is information—a collection of facts, data, and patterns. It is knowing that water boils at 100°C, that Paris is the capital of France, or that exercise is good for one’s health. Large Language Models (LLMs) are highly effective at storing and retrieving this kind of information.

Wisdom, however, is something entirely different. It is the judicious application of knowledge—knowing when, why, and how to use it. Wisdom is filtered through experience, emotional intelligence, ethics, core values, and a deep understanding of human context.

For example, wisdom is choosing silence over the urge to win an argument. It is hearing the disappointment behind a friend’s ‘I’m fine’ and responding with empathy. It is evaluating a lucrative job offer while recognizing the hidden costs to your well-being. It is a business leader understanding that short-term losses are often necessary investments for long-term growth and sustained progress.

Wisdom requires not only accurate information about the world but also about others and oneself. For instance, mistakenly assuming a quiet colleague is arrogant (a failure of knowledge about them) can lead you to dismiss their valuable ideas (an unwise action). Wisdom would be recognizing their introverted nature as a potential source of deep insight.

Why AI Feels Wise (But Isn’t)

AI often appears wise for three primary reasons: 1) Polished communication—models like Chat GPT write with flawless grammar and logical structure, leading our brains to instinctively equate clarity with intelligence; it is akin to mistaking someone’s knowledge and intelligence for their speaking fluency. 2) Pattern-based connections—AI can link disparate concepts, such as ancient Roman economics and modern tech companies, in ways that sound insightful, though this is merely a sophisticated recombination of learned patterns rather than genuine understanding. 3) Emotional mirroring—chatbots are designed to be supportive, patient, and nonjudgmental, which creates the impression of empathy despite the absence of real emotional comprehension. The collective result is that we frequently confuse a compelling style for genuine substance.

The Hidden Dangers of AI Advice

Treating AI as an all-knowing oracle carries serious hidden risks. We risk dulling our own judgment by outsourcing decisions to polished chatbot answers. We may accept fabricated “facts” as truth, since AI can confidently invent studies, experts, or laws—a flaw known as hallucination. Instead of challenging biases, AI often reflects and amplifies them, creating echo chambers that reinforce what we already believe. And when things go wrong—whether it’s a poor financial decision or a medical misstep—the question of accountability remains blurred between the user, the AI, and the company behind it.

Remembering What Makes Us Human

We stand at a transformative moment in history—one where artificial intelligence can process information faster than any human, uncover patterns in vast datasets, and generate coherent, human-like text on virtually any subject. These tools are powerful allies, capable of enhancing our productivity, creativity, and understanding in ways once thought impossible.

Yet, for all their capabilities, they lack the essence of what makes us human. True wisdom does not emerge from algorithms analyzing data; it arises from lived experience—from the tears we’ve shed, the laughter we’ve shared, the mistakes we’ve made, and the lessons we’ve learned; from the values we hold dear and the people we love; from the fears we’ve faced and the courage we’ve found.

As we integrate these tools into our lives, let us remember: they are assistants, not oracles. They can support our thinking but must never replace it. The next time you face a difficult decision and are tempted to ask an AI for answers, pause. Trust the true wisdom that comes from being human—from having lived, loved, lost, and learned.

Why Bigger LLMs Won’t Equal AGI

There is widespread agreement among AI researchers that simply scaling up Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT will not lead to true Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)—a term used for human-like intelligence capable of reasoning, learning, and adapting across diverse tasks. While LLMs excel at generating fluent text and identifying patterns in data, they lack core attributes of genuine intelligence. Although LLMs can perform impressive feats of reasoning—especially with techniques like Chain-of-Thought prompting—this reasoning is often brittle. They struggle with complex, multi-step reasoning and cannot learn continuously from new experiences. Their knowledge is static, frozen at the time of training, and they possess no memory or awareness of past interactions. Unlike humans, they are not active agents: they do not set goals or act independently in the world. Due to these limitations, experts believe achieving AGI will require more than just larger LLMs.
